A judge has ordered a former councilor to pay the vice mayor of Sipalay City P1.3 million in damages for alleging that he overpriced the purchase of medicines for the city.
Kabankalan RTC Judge Henry Arles ordered former Sipalay Councilor Carlos Buenavista Legislador to pay Oscar Montilla, former Sipalay mayor and now vice mayor, P1 million by way of moral damages, P200,000 in exemplary damages, P100,000 in attorney’s fees and the cost of litigation, a copy of the decision furnished the DAILY STAR by lawyer Graciano Arinday Jr. yesterday showed.
Montilla, who is now vice mayor of Sipalay City, told the court that after he was elected mayor in 2001 the tailings from the closed Maricalum Mining Corp. generated “dust storms” which caused immediate danger to the health of his constituents, like respiratory ailments.
