‘Tourist police’ mulled

Negros Oriental Police Provincial Director, Senior Supt. Augusto Marquez, yesterday disclosed plans to train policemen to secure tourism destinations in the province.

Marquez said the 50 new police officers to be deployed by the PNP Regional Command to the province will compose the tourist police team.  The region will detail the policemen following complaints of Negros Oriental police stations of lack of personnel.

Areas threatened by the presence of Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army and crime-prone ones will be given priority for police deployment, but Marquez assured that all police stations will get additional forces.

He said that in other countries, tourist policemen are visible and this helps prevent crimes.

Peace and order and safety are very vital for tourists, because they always consider security when traveling,  Marquez pointed out, adding that one of the reasons for the  increasing tourist arrivals in Negros Oriental is its peaceful and warm community.

President Gloria Arroyo had declared Dumaguete City as the most peaceful place in the country.

Marquez said members of the tourist police will train on the proper way of assisting tourists such as giving directions to tourists, and basic information about the different tourism destination of Negros Oriental and the city.

Tourists visit the province usually for diving and mountain adventure in different sites such as the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao in Sibulan, Lake Balanan in Siaton and beach resorts in Dauin and Apo Island.

Marquez said he will also implement gun-less zones in tourism spots, restaurants and resorts.  This is to prevent tourists from being intimidated by police officers carrying long or visible side firearms, he added.*MA
