Cooperative confab held

The Provincial Cooperative Convention was held Friday at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City with around 500 cooperative directors from 70 member-cooperatives participating.

Present were officials of the cooperative sector of the country, including the Cooperative Development Authority chairperson Lizera Wares, and Arthur Aller, chairperson of the National Cooperative Development Council.

Dr. Profetiza Lima, chairperson of the Provincial Cooperative Development Council in Negros Oriental, said the convention is held every two years to update the cooperative members of the latest development of their sector.

The cooperative directors also signed the Memorandum of Agreement for the 2nd Philippine Cooperative Team Shop that will be held in Dumaguete City, in October next year.

Negros Oriental has 430 functioning member cooperatives which include the 250 already sustainable and 230 categorized as small and those that are newly registered.

Wares said the Negros Oriental Union of Cooperatives is the most workable Cooperative Union in the country. The union assists small cooperatives to become sustainable and efficient in their services.

The union provides service trainings and workshops for small cooperatives through their training arm, the NEORUNCO, and the Philippine Federation of Credit Cooperatives –Visayas Credit Union Leg.

Wares said Negros Oriental is among the provinces in the country that have stable and reliable cooperative leaders.

During the convention, host Gov. Emilio Macias II said the province supports the 2nd Philippine Cooperative Team shop in 2010. He said that if only the government would have the same discipline and attitude as the cooperative, there would be no problem in governance.

Aller said  the team shop will discuss global economic issues, climate change, environmental sustainability, business enterprises and showcase for products and services.

Around 5,000 cooperative directors and leaders are expected to attend the team shop, which is  an offshoot of the Asian Cooperative Team shop Asia to be held this November in Cebu City.*MA
