Young basketeers from St. John’s Institute are strengthening their bid for the Batang PBA Bacolod crown, with the SJI Team A giving its sister team SJI-B a sound thrashing, 66-46, despite an outstanding performance from John Dustin Chua yesterday at the West Negros University gym.
The Arvin Gustilo-mentored SJI-A survived an explosive first quarter play of Chua, who scored all SJI-B’s 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the game.
In answer to Chua’s all-around game, Gustilo managed to tap six points from Ian Japson and two points each from Jason Kho and Timothy Montinola to stay close 10-12 going into the second quarter.
With SJI-B’s star player resting in the bench for the next two quarters, Gustilo’s Johnians build up 30-point lead at 54-24 going into the fourth quarter.
Miguel Jison scored eight points in the second quarter while Ralph Penuela banged in 12 markers in the third for SJI-A.
In the final 10 minutes, young Dustin Chua, once getting a clearance from coach Rey Pandoro to lead SJI-B’s offense, delivered 12 points while Jeric Tajonera backed him up with four points.
Francis De Asis, who scored six points in the second quarter, finished with six points for SJI-B.
In the other games, Barangay 5-Silay beat Big Shots, 75-55, while SBSR delivered another blow to Stallions flagging campaign, 63-48.
