The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental yesterday passed a resolution supporting the policy of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park, declaring the zero to four kilometer radius within the center of Kanlaon Volcano, as a “permanent danger zone”.
Authored by Board Member Enrique Miguel Lacson, the resolution states that the mouth of Kanlaon volcano is found within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone, hence, it is classified as a perilous area for people to reside.
Lacson said barangays located within the 10-kilometer buffer zone in Moises Padilla, La Castellana, La Carlota, Murcia, Bago and San Carlos City, are the most vulnerable to volcanic threats, and are placed under high volcanic risks.
Mt. Kanlaon is an active volcano, which is located in the central portion of Negros island.*GPB
