BETWEEN NEGROS-GUIMARAS
GMA backs
nautical highway

BY CARLA GOMEZ

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has instructed Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza to look into the suggestion of Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco for a new nautical highway route to the province.

Zayco, during lunch with the President at the Ruins in Talisay City Thursday, suggested that a new route for roll on-roll off vessels be established between Guimaras and Negros Occidental through the Pulupandan town that already has a port.

Zayco said he made the suggestion after Guimaras Gov.  Felipe Hilan Nava sought the help of the President in building a bridge between Guimaras and Iloilo.

So he suggested that a new roll on-roll off route then be created from a port in Guimaras to Pulupandan to  boost tourism and trade between Negros, Guimaras and the rest of Panay, and even Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, Zayco said.

A nautical highway from Iloilo to Bacolod already exists.

“The President immediately called Mendoza to inform him of the suggestions Nava and I made,” Zayco added.

Meanwhile, Zayco said he will follow up the President’s instructions to Finance Secretary Gary Teves and the Department of Labor and Employment regional director to help in job generation activities in Negros Occidental.*CPG
