The Department of Agriculture is implementing P570 million-worth of intervention measures for the palay sector to offset the effects of the El Niño dry spell on rice production this year, DA press release said.
The program will be implemented on “highly valuable” areas, including Negros Occidental, the DA said
This amount is part of the P1.7 billion that the DA will realign from its regular budget in 2010 to carry out measures to reduce the expected production losses in the agriculture sector from a possibly prolonged El Niño attack, according to Agriculture Undersecretary Bernie Fondevilla.

More monitoring
for WV projects
The Department of Labor and Employment Region 6 will intensify its efforts in monitoring existing and new livelihood projects funded in 2009 to ensure the success and sustainability of all funded livelihood projects in Western Visayas, a press release from DOLE said.
Region 6 has approved 49 livelihood projects and released close to P18 million in 2009 to assist a total of 4,458 workers in the formal and informal economy.
The projects are also aimed to help the unemployed enhance their existing livelihood, restore their lost livelihood resources due to natural calamities, and engage in livelihood ventures to provide and augment their families’ income, the press release said.


NFA sells sugar
The National Food Authority is now selling refined sugar at P48 per kg to some market-based outlets like the Institutionalized Bigasan sa Palengke being operated by the federation of NFA accredited rice retailers in Metro Manila to help stabilize the commodity’s price, a press release from the agency said.
To speed up distribution, NFA administrator Jessup Navarro said the agency is repacking into one kilogram bag each, some 800 bags of 50 kilogram sugar the Sugar Regulatory Administration initially released to the NFA.
The 800 Lkg from SRA are allocated to several public market under NFA’s operational jurisdiction depending on the number of existing IBSP in the area.
