10TH TKP MEMORIAL CUP
Terra Dolce, GT Net
pace Class C contest

BY NIDA BUENAFE

Terra Dolce-Tib’s dealt My Spaghetti House another frustrating loss with a 7-0 run in the final minute to get away with a 72-70 win, while GT Net registered its second victory by prevailing over Foodman, 76-69, in Class C action of the 10th TKP Memorial Cup Basketball Tournament at NOMPAC Gym.

Leading by points with a minute and a half remaining at 70-65, Spaghetti failed to stop Alex Chua, Julius Teruel and Ralph Richard Ong, who took turns in delivering the necessary baskets for Terra Dolce in the ensuing plays. Ong’s putback in the final minute did more damage as it drew the fifth foul on Spaghetti main man Bol Manaloto.

Richard Co’s corner jumper from 13 feet could have sent the game into an extra period but the attempt failed to hit its mark, allowing Terra Dolce-Tib’s to celebrate another win.

Buenaflor entry wins
Tangub 6-cock derby

Jojo Buenaflor’s winged warriors emerged as champion in the four-day 6-Cock Bacolod Fiesta Annual Derby at the Don Carlos A.J. Montilla Memorial Coliseum in Barangay Tangub, Bacolod City.

“JB Queng,” Buenaflor’s gamebirds, won all their matches from the preliminaries to the finals.

Four other entries collected five victories and a loss to split the runner-up prize. They were Jimmy Talaban/Andro Baravio Combined C-Z Wild Fire; Ricardo Lava’s Tikyo D’Gladiator; MVS of Leo Dano and Dr. M. Serondo tandem, and Naldo Joquina’s Aldo.

So off to another int’l chess tilt

Filipino GM Wesley So is looking forward to his next big tournament – the 2010 Aeroflot Open chess championship on Feb. 9 to 17 in Moscow, Russia.

Hardly disappointed by his fourth-place finish in the 72nd Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands last week, the 16-year-old So quietly flew back to the country for a brief rest period before preparing for another acid test in his young and storied career.

So is set to leave for the Russian capital via Hong Kong on Sunday.
