Stray bullet kills
sleeping child, 5

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

A 5-year-old child  hit by a stray bullet while sleeping at home died Tuesday in Brgy. Pandan, Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, the police said yesterday.

Senior Inspector Argel Ancheta, Pontevedra police chief,  said Lea Leonor, 5, was hit in the right leg.

A certain Joel Lucton, 21, was also hit in the buttocks, police records also showed.

Ancheta said three unidentified men with 9mm and .45 caliber pistols and wearing bonnets, on board a motorcycle, shot Lucton and his brother, Nonoy, in the barangay Tuesday evening.

Lucton was shot while he and his brother were fleeing from the gunmen, police investigations also showed.

A stray bullet hit the child who was sleeping, and caused her death, Ancheta said.

Senior Supt. Manuel Felix, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, yesterday ordered Ancheta to exert more efforts in identifying the three suspects in the shooting incident.

Ancheta said the incident was reportedly triggered by old grudges, with Lucton as the target of the gunmen.

Pontevedra policemen recovered 10 empty shells of 9mm and .45 caliber pistols at the crime scene.*GPB
