The First Farmers Holding Corp. yesterday denied the existence of the employees’ union that said it is planning to stage a protest against it.
In a letter to the DAILY STAR, FFHC president, Jose Ma. Villanueva said that they have “perfectly nothing to do” with the First Arastre and Stevedoring Services Employees’ Union.
Instead, Villanueva said, it has contracted the First Arrastre and Stevedoring Services to handle and load bags of sugar on transports of sugar traders who buy them from the FFHC.

Stop sugar
exports, gov’t urged
Research group IBON Foundation has called on the government to stop the export of sugar to the US to ensure domestic supply and protect the country’s food security, its press release said.
The group made the appeal amid claims by the Department of Trade and Industry that a “sugar shortage” looms as supermarkets may pull out sugar products in the coming days due to rising prices. A major El Niño episode this year also threatens domestic sugar production, the DTI said.
To stabilize domestic prices, the government resorted to the duty-free importation of 150,000 metric tons of sugar, the group said.
