Be vigilant,
mayor urges townfolk

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Mayor Rodrigo Alanano of Dauin, Negros Oriental, lauded the  vigilance of  the  people  in his town who immediately reported the  presence of  a suspicious looking  person who turned out to be an alleged leader of the New People’s Army.

Florencio Quino, of Balilihan in Bohol and who collects revolutionary taxes for the NPA was recently apprehended by Dauin police operatives following tips from the residents.

Quino was identified  as  one of the top leaders of  the  revolutionary  tax collection  group  of  the  rebel group that extorts money from  politicians  and  big-time  businessmen  in  the  province.

Alanano said he is encouraging residents and barangay officials to monitor all suspicious looking individuals in their places.

He said he has received reports that a group of families, allegedly from Santa Catalina, have evacuated to a barangay in Dauin.

These evacuees are reportedly supporting the NPA’s, Alanano said, adding that he has directed police to investigate  the report,  since  this could  greatly affect  the  peace  and  order in the  town, which has, so far, no record of  any  presence of  armed  groups.

These armed  groups  may also  affect  the  tourism  industry of  the town, considering  that  Dauin is  among the local government units frequented by tourists, Alanano said.

There are now 13 hotel and restaurants, including dive shops managed by foreign nationals in Dauin.*MA
