‘Rice, corn crops in NegOr
not affected by dry weather’

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Rice and corn production in Negros Oriental remains stable amid reports that other areas in the country have been affected by the supposed dry spell, Provincial agriculturist Gregorio Paltinca said.

In fact, harvest season for corn for the second cropping period has already started this month, with optimistic projections of farmers earning an average yield, he added.

Paltinca said farmers who planted their crops on time within the ideal cropping seasons, will not be affected by the perceived dry weather.

IN ZAMBOANGUITA
Farmer killed not
an asset: army
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Lt. Col. Erwin Bernard Neri, commanding officer of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, denied that the farmer shot dead allegedly by suspected New People’s Army men in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental last week, was their civilian asset.

Vicente Parao died, while his brother, Enad, escaped unharmed after an armed group waylaid and opened fire at them, as they were returning home from a fiesta dance at Sitio Domanon, Barangay Nasig-id in Zamboanguita in the afternoon of Feb. 2.

Neri debunked earlier reports that Vicente was killed because he had provided information to the military that led to the Sept. 18, 2009 encounter between army troops and suspected NPA rebels in the boundary of Dauin and Zamboanguita.

NOPH proposes
new rates for MRI

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete City is waiting for the results of consultations conducted vis-à-vis the new rates being proposed for it.

NOPH chief Dr. Dante Domingo said they are still determining the new rates for the MRI, and for other hospital equipment at the diagnostic center.

Domingo said he believes the old rates are outdated, and the hospital management wants to come up with more realistic fees.
