Bid for TRO on sale of
land to city denied

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Provincial Agrarian Reform Adjudicator denied for lack of merit the petition for the issuance of a temporary restraining order sought by the group who consider themselves potential Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program beneficiaries of Hacienda Maria Arao in Bacolod City.

In his order dated Feb. 12, 2010, Provincial Agrarian Reform Adjudicator Isagani Cuello said the TRO can only be issued if the matter is of extreme urgency that grave injustice and irreparable injury will arise if not issued.

Cuello, meanwhile, held in abeyance the resolution of the motion to dismiss filed by defendant Nellie Antigua, et al pending the submission of the written opposition of the complainants and the reply, if any, of the defendants. moremoremore

Church sets grand welcome
for Papal Nuncio tomorrow
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The visit of Archbishop Joseph Edward Adams, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, for the blessing of the Pope John Paul II Tower at the Reclamation Area in Bacolod City will be a day-long affair tomorrow, Fr. Felix Pasquin, San Sebastian Cathedral rector, said yesterday.

The P17-million eight storey tower and 700 square meter lot at the  reclamation area, the site  where the late Pope John Paul II spoke to thousands of Negrenses during his historic visit to Bacolod City on Feb. 20, 1981, is a gift of love to the Church from Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. president Simplicio Palanca,    Pasquin said.

Fronting the tower is an 8-foot sculpture of the Pope by Bro. Jaazeal Jakosalem on top a 6-foot pedestal.

GMA signs law exempting
senior citizens from EVAT

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday signed into law the bill exempting the country’s estimated 4.6 million senior citizens from paying the 12 percent expanded value added tax on basic purchases and other essential goods and services.

This was announced yesterday by Deputy Presidential Spokesman Gary Olivar in a palace statement.

Called the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 (Republic Act 9994), the new law enables senior citizens to enjoy fully the 20-percent discount on consumer goods and services provided under a 2003 legislation known as RA 7342, otherwise known as “An Act to Maximize the Contributions of Senior Citizens to Nation Building, Grant Benefits and Special Privileges, and for Other Purposes,” the statement saidmoremoremore
