‘El Niño no effect
on WV fisheries’

The fisheries sector in Western Visayas is not affected by the El Niño phenomenon that is causing  a long dry spell in some parts of the country, a government press release said.

Director Drusila Bayate of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 6, said that, based on their assessment, the dry spell has not caused any damage to the fisheries sector in the region.

Despite the prevailing scenario, the BFAR-6, she said, has been preparing mitigating measures by identifying vulnerable fishing areas in Western Visayas likely to be affected once the dry spell will continue to worsen.

Sugar prices stabilizing: DA

The price of sugar in Metro Manila is beginning to stabilize after the National Food Authority intervened in the market by selling refined sugar at a subsidized price of P48 per kilogram through the agency’s Institutionalized Bigasan sa Palengke outlets, the Department of Agriculture said yesterday.

The NFA started distributing refined sugar in February after the issuance of Executive Order 857 issued on January 29, 2010 authorizing the agency to intervene in the stabilization of supply and prices of sugar.

The order was issued by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in view of the current tight sugar situation in the market.
