College athletes start campaigning for their respective titular bid today as the CHED National Games starts with 16 events in several venues in Metro Manila.
Organized by the Commission on High Education, more than 5,000 athletes from different collegiate sports in the country are seeing action in this Philippine Sports Commission, Smart, and San Miguel Corp. sponsored sporting event which officially opened yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Up for grabs today are gold, silver, and bronze medals in athletics and swimming in neighboring venues inside the Rizal Sports Complex.
Also getting a wide interest in the Games is men’s boxing, which is making its debut as a medal sport, at the modern gym of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines also at the Rizal Stadium.
Also scheduled to start today are competitions in baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, football, sepak takraw, softball, volleyball, chess, judo, karatedo, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo.
Although no overall champion will be declared at the end of the tournament as agreed by organizers, top individual performers in events such as track and field and swimming will be recognized.*
