Philippine Coast Guard Admiral Walfredo Tamayo expressed his gratitude to Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella for the passage of the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009, a press release from the office of Puentevella said.

Puentevella, chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Communications, authored House Bill No. 5151 in Congress based on Republic Act 99931 or the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009 signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Feb. 12, 2010, the release said.

Through the PCG Law of 2009, the PCG will be attached to the Department of Transportation and Communications and will become part of the Department of National Defense in times of war, the release said.

Puentevella said that under the law, the PCG is mandated to come up with a program that will enable them to respond to “oil spills” or any kind of pollution caused by sea vessels, the press release from his office said.*
