ZTE scandal blamed
for failed investments

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The executive director of the Negros Oriental Investment and Promotions Center said that if not for the ZTE scandal, the establishment of hydro power plants in Negros Oriental would have been pursued.

At a forum on energy management, conservation and audit measures initiated by the Department of Science and Technology recently, Francel Martinez said that more than two years ago, investors from China had started negotiating with local businessmen on the establishment of a hydro power plant in Ayungon and in other areas.

This was recalled as an offshoot of the NBN-ZTE controversy, Martinez said, adding that the plan had included the reopening of copper mining in Basay.

for feeding program

The Dumaguete City government has appropriated P1 million for the “Free Noon Meal Daily Feeding Program” for Grades 1 to 6 school children.

The program offers nutritious lunch consisting of rice, mongo, dilis and sardines. It will run for 40 days, Mondays through Fridays, and end in March.

Mayor Agustin Perdices said proper nutrition is a contributing factor to high academic performance of children, to prepare them for fair and decent employment in the future.

Poverty not
ended in 6 years: Noynoy

Liberal Party standard bearer Noynoy Aquino said anyone elected to the presidency will not be able to end poverty and the other deep-seated problems of the country during his six-year term, a press release from his office said.

“The President is not a miracle worker. One who passes off himself as one is a fraud,” he said at a business forum attended by six presidentiables in Cebu on Friday.

“While EDSA 1 was clearly a miracle, I saw up close how difficult it was to rebuild an economy laid to waste by plunder. I know very well how my mother’s efforts to revive investor confidence in the country were ambushed by those who sought to oust her from the presidency,” Aquino said.
