Dauin pursuing raps
for marine damage

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Mayor Rodrigo Alanano of Dauin, Negros Oriental, has vowed to file charges against those responsible for the damage to the Mandarin Marine Protected Area in Barangay Maayong Tubig.

Alanano said in an interview Friday that this incident should not be taken for granted considering the extensive impact it has on the town’s economy, tourism industry, marginal fishermen’s livelihood, coastal and marine resources and the environment in general.

The Maayong Tubig marine reserve, a famous dive destination known for the presence of the rare mandarin fish, Synchiropus splendidus, was partly devastated on June 18 when the cargo vessel, M/V Lorcon Davao, allegedly plowed through some 100 square meters of coral formations, initial investigation by the Dauin local government unit showed.

At least 50 dive masters from different resorts in Dauin, Negros Oriental, will help in the rehabilitation of the damaged corals at the marine sanctuary in Barangay Maayong-tubig, Dauin, and Negros Oriental.

About 100 square meters of corals in the sanctuary were damaged when a cargo vessel, identified as M/V Lorcan Davao of Lorenzo Shipping Lines, plowed through it last week.

Bigs Eggert, manager of the Atlantis Beach Resort, said they could, at least, rehabilitate the damaged corals especially the table corals that have been turned upside down.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines reported yesterday an upsurge in the number of New People’s Army surrenderees, in the past five years, all over the country.

Maj. Eugenio Julio Osias IV, AFP Civil Relations Service Media Affairs Group chief, said they have recorded 5,417 communist rebels who surrendered to the government from 2005 to 2009.

Of this number, Osias said 2,140 are regular armed combatants, while 3,277 are supporters and sympathizers.
