Bacolod cop killed,
brgy chief stabbed

A barangay captain in Bacolod City was stabbed and wounded allegedly by his neighbor early morning yesterday, while a policeman died also from stabbing while responding to a crime incident in Brgy. Mansilingan, yesterday afternoon.

The victims were identified as Barangay Captain Bernabe Sibug of Purok Magnolia, Brgy. 7, and Police Officer 1 Engelbert Gaudaña of Police Station 7.

Initial investigation showed that Sibug was standing outside his residence at about 6:30 a.m. when the suspect, Erwin Lacorte, who was reportedly under the influence of liquor, came and allegedly stabbed him without provocation. moremoremore

‘SC ruling bad for
sugar industry’

The Supreme Court decision affirming the inclusion of sugar plantations in the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program will lead to lower sugar production that will force the country to import sugar, industry leaders warned Saturday.

But Task Force Mapalad spokesperson Edna Sobrecanay said this was a welcome move to farmer beneficiaries. TFM is an organization that has been fighting for the distribution of land to agrarian reform beneficiaries.

Sugar Regulatory Administrator Bernard Trebol told the DAILY STAR that subdividing sugar lands to one hectare or less will cause sugar production to drop tremendously.moremoremore

Ammonia leak
causes evacuation

An ammonia leak from a warehouse behind the St. Francis Building along Araneta Street in Bacolod City last night led to the evacuation of nearby residents, Jose Ma. Vargas, Bacolod City disaster management head, said.

The pungent smell from the ammonia caused some residents to throw up.

Some shoppers leaving Gaisano City Mall said their eyes teered up and they felt like vomiting from the pungent odorEven commuters on jeeps and motorcycles passing in front of the area complained that the smell made them feel bad.moremoremore
