Truck loaded with sugarcane
overturns, slams into house
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW & MARICAR ARANAS

A 10-wheeler truck loaded with 28 tons of sugarcane fell on its right side and hit a house by the national highway in Barangay Mabuhay of Santa Catalina town, in Negros Oriental Wednesday afternoon.

Some witnesses said the truck was travelling too fast and when it reached a curb on the highway, it fell on its side.

The truck driver, identified as Antonio Burnes, with his assistant Jemson Villarosa, both of Bayawan City, in the province escaped unharmed.  The driver admitted that sleep caught up with him while he was driving and said it was a “human error”. But he denied being under the influence of hard liquor.

Burnes said he was thankful that no one was hurt when the truck hit the house.

The truck and the sugarcane, owned by a certain Gingging Diao of Bayawan City, were en route to a sugar mill in Bais City.

The owner of the house, Crispiniano Ager, said he is thankful to the Lord that his grandchildren were not inside the house when the incident happened. Ager said he will demand payment for the damage to his house and jetmatic water pump.

He said the water pump is very important because it is their source of drinking water.*JFP/MA
