My friend had a nose lift

Dear Tita,

My friend Mina (not her real name), and I have been very close since we were in college. We shared problems, joys and almost everything about our lives with each other. We trusted each other with our deepest secrets, knowing that we would always be true to one another. A few years ago, Mina left for Manila as she was offered a job there. We managed to keep in touch through text and emails.

Last month, she decided to come home for a visit. When I saw her, I was shocked! She looked so different that I almost didn’t recognize her. It suddenly occurred to me that her nose looked different – she had a nose lift. But instead of making her beautiful, it made her look like a freak! It was so sharp and pinched that it was obviously not her real nose. Mina asked me what I thought of her nose job. I didn’t have the heart to tell her the truth so I lied and said she looked great. Now I regret lying to her because she told me she is planning to have an eye lift when she returns to Manila. Judging from the work done to her nose, I am afraid she will look even worse with an eye lift. I have been almost tempted to tell her the truth but I am afraid it would ruin our friendship. She might even hate me.

What should I do?

Dear Concerned Friend,

If you really care about your friend, you have to tell her the truth. Do this before she goes and decides to have her eye lift operation. I once saw a TV documentary about botched-up plastic surgeries. One featured a horrendous eye lift that ended with the woman unable to close her eyes completely. She ended up with a scary wide-eyed expression that frightened people who saw her for the first time. Please tell this to your friend. Obviously her plastic surgeon didn’t do a good job on her nose lift. If nobody tells her the truth, she might go back to him for her eye lift. You owe it to your friendship to tell Mina the truth.
