10 surrenderees
key NPA men

The 10 self-confessed members of the Communist Party of the Philippines- New People’s Army who recently gave up and renounced the armed struggle, occupied key positions at the New People’s Army Northern Negros Front, the military said yesterday.

Lt. Col. Isabelo de los Reyes, 303rd Infantry Brigade Civil Military Operations officer, said almost all of the 10 rebel returnees are party members, squad leaders, finance, logistic and medical officers of the Northern Negros Front of the Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros.

Eight of the 10 returnees were identified as Freddie Sanchez, alias Ka Warboy; Mary Jane Baynosa, alias Ka Shyna; Romy Olite,alias KaJob; Ronel Gonzaga, alias Ka Dino; John Rey Charita,alias Ka JB/RC; Jonesia Charita, Paulino Aton and Ronald Aton, of Toboso and Calatrava, he said.

A series of encounters in the hinterlands of Toboso, Calatrava and Escalante City, in Negros Occidental early this week, came after the 10 rebels surrendered to the 62nd Infantry Battalion in northern Negros.

A policeman was injured in the encounter in Escalante, while three suspected rebels, including a barangay kagawad, were captured by 62nd IB soldiers Tuesday during a gunbatle in Brgy.Bandila,Toboso.

Antonio Damalerio, a kagawad of Bandila, Toboso, who was among those arrested allegedly served as courier and collector of the NPA, while his companion Melvin Pacatang is a full-time member of the NNF Motorola platoon, a  military report said.

Damalerio, Pacatang and his son, Hernani, were captured by Army soldiers, who were conducting clearing operations at the encounter site  in Brgy. Bandila, Toboso, Lt. Col. Eduardo Gubat, 62nd IB commander, said.

Also recovered from the encounter site were an improvised homemade shotgun with a magazine, eight live ammunition for a shotgun, 13 backpacks containing personal belongings,  five magazines of M1-6 assault rifles containing 19 ammunition, subversive documents, jungle hammocks, assorted medicine, three bolos and an ammunition link for a M-60 machine gun, as well as three CPP-NPA red flags.* GPB
