AX Currency grab 7th victory
in SJI Alumni Basketball Cup

AX Currency Exchange (2006-08) rolled to its seventh victory with 97-80 taming of Gentech/Sun Cellular 1993-95, while Eleven Degrees 1996-98 got its first victory, 78-67, over Nitro 2003-06 in the 4th St. John’s Institute Alumni Basketball Cup at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activities Center.

Orix 2001-02 turned back Shakey’s 2009-2011 in an 88-83 decisive win to enter the quarterfinal round.

Undefeated in 2 years, defending champ AX (formerly Dynamic Metals) continues to dominate the opposition and is one game away from sweeping the elimination round.

Alvin Dionela paced AX  with 18 points, Raymund Lacson added 12 points, Danty Ma and Mark Coo contributed 10 points each, Axel Yao and Brian Coo delivered 8 points, apiece.

Andy Angudong had a game-high 26 points in a losing effort, Michael Ang scored 15 points, Christian Castro hit 9 points, and Wilford Sy made 7 points.

With the threat of being eliminated hanging over their heads, 11 Degrees players played with a sense of urgency and scored a pivotal victory to tie Nitro at 1-5.

Eleven Degrees established a 37-24 lead at the half led by Timothy Chua, Daniel Tan and Bryan Ongsingco with 6 points each even as  Michael Sian and Maurice Tio also had 6 points apiece.

Carlo Ongsingco and Sian combined for 15 points to cut the deficit to 57-50.

But Tim Garrucho and Berto Uysang combined for 12 points to spearhead the balanced offense of 11 Degrees in the payoff quarter to secure the victory.

Shakey’s, after taking a 36-29 lead in the first half, saw its lead fizzled behind a two-player disadvantage in the third quarter.

David Diente and Virgilio Guzman fouled out in the third quarter and can not be replaced. Orix took advantage and grabbed a 62-57 lead at the end of the third quarter as Danny Drilon drilled 10 points and Ralph Ong had 6 points.

In the fourth quarter, Orix’s balanced offense led by Robert June Genovea’s 9 points, was able to neutralize the Shakey’s uprising led by Carl Suarez’s 17 points.

Ralph Ong  paced Orix with 14 points, Robert June Genovea added 13 points, Danny Drilon and Vincent Genovea  made 12 points, JanJan Guevarra had 9 points.

Suarez finished with 27 ponts, Allen Dionela shot 11, Luigi Coo fired 9, Jappy Cuaycong, Kevin Banzon, and Ian Chan contributed 6 points each.*with a report fro Stephen Tan
