ON OFFENSIVE ART
Church indignation rally set
BY LISA GAPAC

The Diocese of Bacolod will hold an indignation rally at the San Sebastian Cathedral 5 p.m. Monday to express the church resentment of what a particular artist has done to the crucifix and the image of Jesus Christ, Fr. Fr. Felix Pasquin said yesterday.

Pasquin was referring to Mideo Cruz, the artist who integrated the symbols of pop culture with Christ in his work that has been exhibited at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

“For us it is a sin of sacrilege. It is objectionable and unacceptable,” he said. The artist claimed freedom of expression but, “Our church teachings tells us that a work of art that is immoral is unaesthetic,” he added.

In the ABS-CBN interview, Bishop Vicente Navarra said the art is very demeaning and insulting, adding, “We have to show our protest, our indignation for bashing the image of God.”

Pasquin also said that to violate the moral order for the sake of exalting the autonomy of art is not only arrogant pride but the very alienation of art. “Moral perversion has no place in arts,” he added.

They will bring an effigy of Cruz with horns on his head and a tail to the rally, he also said. But they will burn only the symbols of the devil because, “We do not condemn the sinner but the sins.”

The rally will be participated in by lay associations, basic ecclesiastical communities, parishioners, renewal groups, and parishes under the four vicariates in Bacolod, Pasquin added. *LTG
