Terra Dolce (1990-92) secured the No. 2 spot by beating the Legends (1989 & earlier), 65-54, in the 4th St. John’s Institute Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup played at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activities Center.
The Legends had a hard time matching up with the frontline of Oliver Manaloto and Chris Javelosa as the duo delivered 18 and 14 points, respectively.
Terra Dolce opened the game with a 13-2 lead and finished with a 15-9 first quarter advantage as Manaoloto scored seven points and Jack Chan added four points.
Teofilo Ponce Jr. provided the offensive spark with eight points for and Archie Co added four points as Terra Dolce extended the lead at the half, 30-19, even as Kevin Ramos scored six points for the Legends.
Opening the third quarter with a 14-0 run, the Legends surprised Terra Dolce as Kevin Ramos knocked down two treys and Raymund Andrade converted his jumpshots for a 33-30 lead.
But Terra Dolce was quick to recover as Javelosa and Manaloto bullied their way in the shaded area to keep the lead at 45-41 going to the fourth quarter.
Dominic Ciocon, and Hernan Lopez complemented the duo as they established several double-digit lead while the Legends could only cut down the deficit to as low as seven points.
Lopez scored seven points and Ciocon had six points.
The Legends was led by Ramos with 22 points, Andrade and Atong Villanueva shot 8 points apiece, Daniel Chiu and Omay Demonteverde made five points each.
Quarterfinals start today with the Legends meeting Phoenix at 6:30 p.m. followed by the match-up between Shakey’s and Gentech at 8 p.m.
Tomorrow, AX Currency will have a twice-to-beat advantage against 11 Degrees at 6 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. Terra Dolce will clash against Orix.*NAB
