Plans are underway to hold a province-wide Local Government Unit Cup, an inter-LGU basketball tournament, Talisay Mayor Eric Saratan said during the opening of the 3rd District Games 2011 "Palarong Tercer Distrito" in Victorias City Coliseum, Saturday.
Saratan, the overall coordinator and tournament manager of the 3rd District Games, said the LGU Cup will be held sometime this year and the 3rd District will field a team with members to be selected from the competing squads in the “Palarong Tercer Distrito”.
Five basketball teams from the cities of Victorias, Silay, Talisay, and the towns of EB Magalona and Murcia are competing in the 40-up division , while four are seeing action in the open category of the District Games.
In the 40-up category, Saratan said the teams can field former varsity players, even former PBA players who are at least 50 years old. With several former varsity cagers in the team, Silay beat Victorias in Saturday’s curtain-raiser.
The games will be played only during weekends of September to December with a home-and-away format, Saratan said.
The District Games also features an open volleyball competition for men and women teams from the five LGUs.
During the opening ceremonies, Rep. Abelardo "Albee" Benitez said that sports competitions will further cement the unity of all sectors in the district.
The Games, he said, will tap potential athletes from the District to hone their skills as he urged the mayors in Victorias, EB Magalona, Silay, Talisay and Murcia to initiate more sports development programs.
The Games opened with a caravan from Talisay City to Victorias City and the selection of the Games’ muse with Tara Mae Divinagracia of Murcia besting the other candidates.*NAB
