7 trophies for Negros shooters
in Magnus Cup 2011 tourney

Ace shooters from the Gun Club of Negros Occidental brought home seven trophies after making their mark in the Magnus Cup 2011 held recently in Armscor Shooting Ranges in Marikina.

Picking up the championship in their respective divisions were Stephen Hinojales, Tootsie Anglo, Jannette Gonzaga, Talisay vice mayor Neil Lizares, and Talisay councilor CB Lacson.

Hinojales was champion in the Open division, Anglo topped the Production Senior category and finished 3rd runner-up overall in Production division, Gonzaga reigned in the Ladies Standard category, Lizares rule the Standard competition for LGU and was 7th  overall on aggregate in Production, while Lacson claimed the championship in Producion division LGU category.

Considered as one of the top level shooting competitions sanctioned by the Philippine Practical Shooting Association, Magnus Cup 2011 drew almost 350 competitors from Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, USA, and host Philippines.

The tournament had 12 courses of fire, requiring a minimum of 240 rounds of ammunition staged in a superior quality level of course design.

Gonzaga said both speed and accuracy were required from every participant due to the quantity of moving targets, steel plates and no-shoot targets.

With the seven trophies they won, she said GCNO was the only club in the country that has the most number of championships in one group.

As one of the major PPSA-sanctioned competitions, the Magnus Cup is in preparation for the practical shooting World Shoot set this October 3-8 in Rhodes, Greece.

Held in every three years, the six-day World Shoot competition requires a minimum of 500 rounds of ammunition.

During the 2008 World Shoot in Bali, Indonesia, three GCNO members -- Anglo, Hinojales, and Gonzaga, made the country and the province proud by bagging the championship in their respective category.

Anglo was world champion in Production Senior, national team member Hinojales helped the Philippine team in bagging the 2nd overall finish in the Open division, and Gonzaga plucked the silver in the Ladies’ Standard.

With their successful campaign in the Magnus Cup 2011, Gonzaga said they hope to replicate if not surpass their accomplishment in the 2008 World Shoot when they compete in Greece in October.*NAB
