Assassins gun down
mediaman in chase

A mediaman was gunned down in a motorcycle chase in EB Magalona town, Negros Occidental, at about 5:50 p.m. yesterday.

Killed was Niel Aranga Jimena, 42, of Barangay San Isidro, La Paz, Iloilo, but currently residing in Hacienda Teresa, Barangay Alicante, EB Magalona, SPO4 Leonardo Cobing, EB Magalona police officer-in-charge, said last night.

Jimena, an Iloilo radio blocktimer, had worked for the defunct dyRP in Iloilo and dyAG in Cadiz City in Negros Occidental, and was set to start a blocktime program at Radio Mindanao Network-dyRI Iloilo tonight, his friend Larry Trinidad, a reporter for dyHB-RMN Bacolod, said.

Jimena had also reportedly worked as an asset for the Philippine Drug Enforcement Unit and Dyaryo Iloilo, Trinidad said.

Cobing said Jimena had also been shot in 2009.

Jimena yesterday was on his motorcycle headed north from Bacolod going towards Victorias City  when residents heard gunshots in the area of Hacienda San Jose, Barangay Damgo, EB Magalona, and saw him turn his vehicle around to head south, Cobing said.

Two men on board a Honda Wave motorcycle were seen chasing him and successive gunfire was heard until his vehicle fell on its side at Barangay 3 Poblacion, EB Magalona, he added.

Witnesses said Jimena’s motorcycle appeared to be slowing down as he called for help, after he had apparently been hit, the police officer said.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City.

Jimena sustained five gunshot wounds on the back from a .45 caliber pistol, Cobing said.

Cobing said Jimena had also been shot near Malago Bridge in Victorias City in September 2009.

At the time of his death he was living-in with school teacher Cheryl Tison in EB Magalona, the police said.

The police were still investigating the motive for his killing, Cobing said.*CPG
