BIR to collect
excise taxes on quarry

The Bureau of Internal Revenue District 79 in Dumaguete  City echoed the call of President Benigno Aquino III, to strengthen the administration of tax measures rather than impose new ones.

Revenue District 79 chief,  CrecencioAgad,  called on   lawyers, accountants, doctors, teachers, engineers, and other professionals and  business establishments to declare their actual income and not  wait  for  an actual assessment to determne underdeclarations.

Agad received orders to collect these taxes,  as well as excise taxes  on quarry materials under the Tax Reform Act of 1997.  He  noted the construction boom in the province but  said remittance of excise taxes is way below what is expected.

Under  Section 130 of the act,  payment of excise tax is due  upon extraction of quarry materials, he said.

Agad said the bureau is doing this due  to its huge target collection for August which is P122.4 million.  With less than one week left, its collection is only more than 50 percent.

The local revenue office is also campaigning  on  taxpayers to ask for receipts for every purchase of goods and services as they will  not only be helping government collect the right amount of taxes, but will also have  an opportunity to become a millionaire.*JG
