USLS spikers rule
Bro. Ceci Class A

Living up to their billing as the team to beat in the tournament, the University of St. La Salle bagged the crown in Class A men and women divisions of the 3rd Bro. Ceci Hojilla Memorial Cup Volleyball Championships at the USLS Covered Court yesterday.

It was an all-La Salle showdown in the men’s final round as the USLS varsity squad cruised to a three-straight win against Iloilo Doctors College in the semifinals, 25-15, 25-15, 25-18, while USLS Alumni beat No. 2 team UNO-Recoletos in four sets, 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-14 in the other semis match.

In yesterday’s championship game, the varsity squad dominated the Alumni team in three sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, to capture the title with Jim Ray De Pedro of the champion team home the Most Valuable Player award. IDC finished at third place.

The La Sallians remained a force to reckon with in the women’s category as they once again turned back IDC in the semifinals in three sets, 25-10, 25-15, 25-22, to arrange a final clash against UNO-R after the latter prevailed over Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18.

Determined to stamp their class in the tournament, the Lady Stingers never gave the Unorians a chance to get near in the first set as they dominated the set 25-13.

UNO-R tried to equalize in the second set as they traded volleys and spikes with the La Sallians, but USLS remained undaunted as their defense held on for a 25-21 win before finishing off UNO-R, 25-12 in the third set.

Patty Jane Orendain was tournament MVP as CSA-B settled for third place.

Meanwhile, two teams from Manila that will be seeing action in a professional league arrived in Bacolod City the other day for tune-up games against the USLS Varsity Alumni squads.

The guest teams failed to secure a win in the friendly games as they went down, 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17 in the men’s group and 22-25, 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 in the women’s bracket.*NAB
