Superiority under the boards and relentless attack gave defending champion Team 5/Davies an 88-82 victory over Team 7/MS Tablet in the championship of Bacolod Tay Tung High School Alumni Basketball League at the Po Hang gym.

RB Chua powered his way inside with 18 points, hitting three from the arc while partner Carl Stephen Edemne added 16 markers, 10 of them in the decisive quarter. Guard Aaron Paul Guevarra delivered 12 points and Chibon Uy contributed 10 more points with his lane incursions.

MS Tablet sizzled in the first quarter as the squad registered a 31-12 lead, but Team 5 turned the table with a 23-14 run in the second canto as Chua hit 12 points.

USLS spikers rule
Bro. Ceci Class A

Living up to their billing as the team to beat in the tournament, the University of St. La Salle bagged the crown in Class A men and women divisions of the 3rd Bro. Ceci Hojilla Memorial Cup Volleyball Championships at the USLS Covered Court yesterday.

It was an all-La Salle showdown in the men’s final round as the USLS varsity squad cruised to a three-straight win against Iloilo Doctors College in the semifinals, 25-15, 25-15, 25-18, while USLS Alumni beat No. 2 team UNO-Recoletos in four sets, 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-14 in the other semis match.

In yesterday’s championship game, the varsity squad dominated the Alumni team in three sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, to capture the title with Jim Ray De Pedro of the champion team home the Most Valuable Player award. IDC finished at third place.

200 teams to join
`Doc Eric’ bootfest

Around 200 football teams from Dumaguete, Iloilo and host Negros will compete in the eight categories of the Mayor Doc Eric Minuluan 2011 Football Festival that will open on September 3 at the Talisay Football Field.

Tournament commissioner Warren Concepcion said all the games will be played 7-a-side and the teams will vie for top honors in boys and girls’ Under-13, boys’ Under 17, 38-Above men, boys’ Under-15, ladies’ open, men’s open, and Under 10 boys/girls mixed.

Spicing up the opening ceremonies on September 3 will be the presence of Philippine men’s football team Azkals’ co-captain Chieffy Caligdong, Concepcion said.
