606 ‘students’ complete
'on air' farming course

More than 600 farmers completed the school-on-the-air distance study program of the Department of Agriculture Region 6 recently, a government press release said.

This year’s students who came from 25 municipalities in Western Visayas were young, and aged 17 to 25 years old.

The DA 6 School-on-the-Air encourages young people to learn farming techniques through a series of broadcast modules.

The school aired three-times a week on topics such as organic and sustainable farming, the press release said.

The SOA started in July, with students initially tested on their knowledge on the said topics to be covered in the course, the press release said. Gaton said the school-on the air will award honor students during the graduation ceremony.

At the recent 8th National Organic Agriculture Conference President Benigno Aquino directed the Department of Agriculture to ensure that two percent of its annual budget be allocated for the implementation of it’s programs and policies on organic agriculture, the press release added.*
