The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will issue this month a one-piso legal tender coin commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, which the country celebrated last June 19, 2011, a press release from BSP said.
The face of the coin features the portrait of the hero and the marking, “150 years,” “Republika ng Pilipinas” and “1861-2011”.
Etched on the reverse side are the new BSP seal, “1-piso” and “2011.”
BSP produced 10 million pieces of the round, grayish, nickel-plated steel coin which has the same size (24-millimeters in diameter) and weight (5.35 grams) as the one-peso coin currently in circulation.
Both the Office of the President and BSP’s Monetary Board approved the issuance of the coin, the press release said.
Last June 17, 2011, BSP also paid tribute to Dr. Rizal through the exhibit, “Rizal in Our Midst: A Homage to Greatness,” which showcased coins and banknotes ranging from five centavos to 100 pesos since 1903 where Rizal’s image or monument appears.*
