Wildlife quiz bowl
winners named

Mansilingan Agro-Industrial High School bested 34 other schools and teams from all over Negros Occidental in a recent Wildlife Quiz Bowl, a Philippine Information Agency press release said.

MAIHS was represented by Argel Joseph Luzano and Sharlene Faith Escalona with coaches Antonieta Delmo and Nancy Hulleza during the quiz bowl held at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Gym, the press release said.

In second place was Colegio de Sto. Tomas-Recoletos of San Carlos City with Roin Kim Asuncion and Jemar Bagacay and coach Marinelle Ocampo, while Handumanan National High School contestants Adrian Christian Amata and Jenerie Martinico with coach Fermina Tabura were in third place.

Winners were awarded trophies and medals by of the provincial government, the press release added.*

SSA holds
bloodletting drive

St. Scholastica’s Academy in Bacolod City recently spearheaded a bloodletting activity on the theme “Give blood, save a life and make a difference,” a press release from SSA said.

Parent volunteers of SSA-B, with 61 police trainees from the National Police Training School, donated blood, the press release said.

The bloodletting project was initiated by the Student Council Organization of SSA-B led by Allana Nelllas.

The project was assisted by the Philippine National Red Cross and the parent doctors who helped in the screening procedure, the press release added.*

NORSU student
vies for award

A female officer of the Air Force-Reserved Officer Training Corps of the Negros Oriental State University in Dumaguete City has been nominated by the Philippine Air Force to the nationwide search for the Armed Forces of the Philippines-ROTC Cadet of the Year (female category) Award.

Cadette Col. Jenith Brene Corpis, a junior Criminology student at the NORSU-Dumaguete main campus, and corps commander of the university’s AF-ROTC, was nominated in June by the PAF to compete for the award, 2Lt. Mark Lagria, commandant of NORSU’S Air Force-ROTC, said.

The awarding will be held on December 21 during the 76th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.*JFP

UNO-R holds ‘Binyagan 2011’

A joint outreach program, “Binyagan 2011,” for the poorest of the poor spearheaded by the Religious Education Department and the Campus Ministry Office, in coordination with the University Community Development Office, was held at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos gymnasium in Bacolod City recently.

The Mass Baptism was celebrated by Fr. Excel Saycon, while the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception was officiated by Fr. Dionisio Cachero, UNO-R president, a press release from the university said.

Cachero, in his homily reminded everyone that the season of Advent is the time for everyone to prepare for the coming of Christ. He also focused his homily on the Blessed Mother as Model of faith and obedience. 

A total of 62 catechumens were christened.

Meanwhile, a talk on “Getting, Finding, Verifying and Building Sources” was held at the UNO-R President’s Hall, with Miner Generalao, head of the Research Department of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, as the speaker.

About 125 students were present.  Bro. Tagoy Jakosalem gave the opening and the closing address.*
