Best-of-three showdown
starts today in Albee Cup

After almost four months of weekend competition, the top two teams in both the Open and 40-Up divisions of the 1st Tercer Distrito Albee Cup Basketball Tournament will be playing their respective best-of-three series starting this weekend, a press release from the organizers said.

Victorias and Silay will dispute the title in the 40-Up category with the first encounter set this afternoon, 4 p.m. at Kansilayan Gym in Silay City. Simultaneously, EB Magalona and Talisay will dispute Game 1 in the Open division at the Talisay gym.

Unbeaten in the eliminations, Silay topped the 40-Up group and enjoyed a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals, while Talisay took the No. 1 spot in the Open division with seven wins and one loss.

Victorias barged into the finals after beating Silay in their knock-out semis match-up, while EB Magalona defeated Silay, 73-62, in the Open category to earn the right of challenging Talisay for the title, the press release said.

With its lineup strengthened by the presence of former college varsity players, the Silay 40-Up team is the heavy favorite to win the title, the press release said.

Among the members of the Team Silay are former Colegio San Agustin Eagle Rex Bayer and former UNO-R Ram Genaro Ledesma, while Victorias’ lineup is beefed up former WNU Mustangs Romeo Bejidor and Edilberto Calvo.

Bayer and Ledesma saw action for the Eagles in the 90s, while Bejidor and Calvo were members of the champion Munstangs team in the 70s.

In the Open category, Talisay has former WNU and FEU varsity Sunny Abaring, CSA-B Eagle Winnie Alvarez, Stinger Aldrich Apuang and WVRAA campaigner Jade Calma of Mansilingan Christian Academy.

On the other hand, EB Magalona has former WNU Mustang Winrich Posoc and former Stinger Chad Paez.*
