‘Mentally-ill’ man shot dead: police

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

A man believed to be suffering from some kind of mental illness was shot dead around midnight Monday in Bacong, Negros Oriental.

Initial police reports said the victim, Arnold Bolonguita, 27, single, of Sacsac in Bacong, was found dead at about 6 a.m. yesterday about 100 meters from the highway.

Sr. Insp. Leopoldo Ijan, Bacong police chief, said that neighbors of the victim told police investigators they heard what sounded like a gunshot around midnight Monday.

The victim succumbed to a single bullet wound in his belly, believed to be caused by a round fired from a shotgun, the police said.

Bolonguita was said to be mentally-ill and had undergone rehabilitation but had escaped from the treatment facility where he was admitted, Ijan said.

The victim was also suspected of involvement in petty theft in Bacong. A post mortem examination was conducted by Dr. Vivien Ceniza, municipal health officer of Bacong.

The police have no leads yet as to the motive of the crime or the identity of the perpetrator.*JFP
