P50 wage hike bid
to be filed soon

BY CARLA GOMEZ

The labor sector is set to seek a P50 across-the-board wage increase in Western Visayas, Wennie Sancho, labor representative on the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Western Visayas, said yesterday.

Expected to file the petition is one of the affiliates of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines in Region 6, he said.

Yesterday the Negros Labor Coalition filed a manifestation for wage increase before the RTWPB, he said.

But under the rules, such a petition has to be filed by a labor federation or a legitimate labor organization, he said, pointing out that the NLC is coalition of various groups.

He expects the petition to be filed next week, Sancho said.

He said Malacañang’s statement that it is opposed to a wage hike is a form of intervention, and the President cannot intervene in the process of wage fixing that is the task of the RTWPB.

The statement of Malacañang has a negative effect, it serves as a challenge to the workers, Sancho added.

A wage hike is necessary because of the extraordinary increase in the price of petroleum products that is driving up the prices of basic goods and commodities, and there is an impending fare rate increase, he added.*CPG
