Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta is hopeful that President Benigno Aquino III could find time to grace the RP Azkals vs. Mongolia match-up at the Panaad Sports Stadium in Bacolod City on Feb. 9.
Araneta has coordinated with the Philippine Sports Commission on Monday about the letter of invitation to the President.
Should the president grace the event, he will lead the entire Filipino nation in supporting the Azkals against Mongolia in its opening duel in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup.
When the Azkals were invited by Aquino to Malacañang after their semi-final match against Indonesia in the AFF Suzuki Cup, the President promised the team to support football and that never again will the country be embarrassed for not hosting an international competition due to lack of playing venue.
He was also given a blue jersey with No. 1 on it by the team as their token of appreciation.
If the President accepts the invitation, he will be sitting in one of the 6,000 reserved seats for the VIPs and other guests, while the 9,000 remaining seats in the Stadium will be free to the public on a first-come, firs-served basis.
Meanwhile, reports from the PFF also said that three TV stations – ABS-CBN, GMA-7, AND TV-5 -- have expressed interest in becoming the official broadcaster of the event.
The Azkals has already started their training early this week at the University of Makati under new German coach Hans Michael Weiss and supervised its team manager Dan Palami.
They are scheduled to arrive in Bacolod City next week for ground familiarization and practice at the Panaad field.*NAB
