National University Games president Roger Banzuela and members ofs the Capiz PRISAA will meet on July 5 to finalize the hosting of the 16th University Games in Roxas City, Capiz on October 22 to 29.
Banzuela said he will meet with Monsignor Hilata of Colegio de la Purisima and the members of the Capiz PRISAA and they will inspect the playing venues and billeting centers for the delegates from the different colleges and universities in the country.
He said that several pension houses and motels were constructed recently in Roxas City, which can provide accommodation to the visiting delegations.
Earlier, Banzuela said that while billeting areas and playing venues will not be a problem, there were concerns aired over the transportation of athletes who will come from Luzon and Mindanao.
The UniGames president expressed hopes that this minor concern will be easily addressed.
He also said that invitations are now being sent to the colleges and universities throughout the country, who have been regularly competing in the UniGames.
In last year’s competition at Silliman University in Dumaguete City in
Negros Oriental, about 56 schools participated in 16 sports disciplines.
UniGames is the only tertiary sports competition that has participants from both private and public colleges and universities in the country.
The Province of Capiz and the City of Roxas expressed interest in hosting the games this year after University of St. La Salle declined, citing its numerous ongoing construction and renovation projects in the campus, including its track oval.
The National University Games is a brainchild of former USLS president, Bro. Rolando R. Dizon, in 1996 and was last staged at the La Salle campus in Bacolod in 2007.*NAB
