Soldier wounded in
clash with rebels

A soldier was wounded in a clash between Philippine Army troopers of the 11th Infantry Battalion and suspected New People’s Army guerillas at around 8:15 a.m. yesterday, in Barangay Tacpao, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

Maj. Sonny Gonzales, of the 302nd Infantry Brigade, identified the wounded soldier as Private Roy Salvador.

Initial reports said 11th IB men were conducting combat patrol operations in Sitio Lag-asan, Barangay Tacpao, when they encountered about 15 armed men believed to be NPA rebels, Gonzales said.

He also said the soldiers were acting on a tip from a concerned citizen about the presence of the rebels who were allegedly asking for food stuff from residents.

The Philippine Army in the province also claimed to have additional information that the NPA is planning to conduct tactical offensives in Guihulngan and a plan to liquidate Elpidio Villar, barangay captain of Linantuyan, he added.

Villar and barangay council members had passed a resolution years ago declaring members of Karapatan, persona non grata, which the Philippine Army sees as the possible reason for the plan against Villar, Gonzales said.

Hot pursuit operations are ongoing while Salvador is still in the encounter area, still waiting to be evacuated to the nearest hospital for treatment, Gonzales said.*JFP
