Gentech/ Sun Cell
streaks past Shakey’s

Gentech /Sun Cellular (1993-95) held off Shakey’s 2009-11 86-78 in the 4th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activities Center.

Shakey’s recovered from a 17-point deficit  and even took the lead in the late stages of the fourth quarter but fell short on the timely hits by Gentech Andy Angodung and Michael Ang.

In the payoff quarter, Shakey’s facing a double digit deficit, opened the quarter with two triples from Luigi Coo against Gentech Julius Teruel’s   jumpers.

Oliver Lo’s putback gave Gentech its last double digit lead at  69-59, as Shakey’s Allen Dionela scored  five straight points and a Daniel Ong layup cut the lead to three points.

Angodung’s triple gave Sun some breathing room at 72-66, but Shakey’s unleashed an 8-0 run with Ong and Jappy Cuaycong dividing the points between them to give their team its first taste of the lead at 74-72 with 3:30 left.

Angodung scored on three straight layups against a Cuaycong jumper for a 78-76  Sun advantage with less than two minutes remaining.

Gentech Michael Ang delivered a dagger trey to extend the lead to five points with 1:06 left in the clock.

Sun Cellular took an early first quarter 28-15 lead behind Angodung’s 15 points and Mark Cueva’s five points.

Cedrick Uberas and Dionela combined their efforts in the second quarter to cut the deficit at the half, 42-33.

Fr. Clarence Canafe was unstoppable in the low-post as he scattered all his 11 points in the third quarter, but Gentech  had an answer as Christian Castro  and Mark Cueva conspired for 16 points to extend the lead to 63-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Games today will feature Phoenix 99/2k against  11 degrees 1996-98 at 6:30 p.m. and AX Currency Exchange against Batch 2001-02 in the second game.*with a report from Stephen Tan
