Governor lauds P-Noy
for reforestation thrust

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo yesterday said he was happy that President Benigno Aquino III prioritized reforestation projects to help minimize flooding, during his State of the Nation Address Monday.

The president in his SONA said incentives will be provided to communities protecting trees for the environment. This will help ensure the growth of trees and the success of reforestation projects, the President said, adding that he wanted more realistic environmental programs, and not those only for photo ops.

Degamo said the provincial government has implemented the pocket forest program in all barangays, wherein he offered to give P1 million worth of projects as reward for barangays having the highest number of growing trees.

He is hoping that the national government will pour in more funding for reforestation projects to the local government units. The declaration of the President will complement the program of the province, Degamo said.

Board Member Rodrigo Alanano, chairman of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources at the Provincial Board, said he is grateful that the President has specific and realistic programs for the environment.

The love for the environment must be present in the leaders’ heart so that people will follow, Alanano said. *MA
