Fire hits three
Silay classrooms

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Fire destroyed three classrooms and damaged the canteen of an elementary school in Brgy. Bagtik, Silay City, Negros Occidental, early yesterday  morning.

The destruction was placed at  P1.3 million.

Arson investigator, Senior Fire Officer  2 Rommel Velez, said they received acall from a concerned citizen at about 1:25 a.m. informing them that several buildings of Santo Rosario Elementary School were on fire.

When they arrived in the area the classrooms  were already destroyed because the fire began at 12:30 a.m., Velez said.

Vicente Bihan, a member of the school staff, said the  fire originated from the middle classroom and rapidly spread to the adjacent classrooms and the schools’ canteen.

Investigation showed that the fire originated from the ceiling and may have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

The electric wires could have been destroyed by rats in the ceiling causing the live wires to trigger the fire, Velez said.

The Bureau of Fire Protection is reminding the public to check  on their electrical connections to prevent fires.*APN
