The Western Visayas hog industry is expected to get a boost from the World Organization for Animal Health declaration that the country is a foot and mouth disease-free zone, a government press release said.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease that does not affect humans but has devastating effects on animals with cloven hooves, such as cattle, swine, sheep, goats and deer.
Dr. Jonic Natividad, regional veterinary quarantine officer of the Department of Agriculture, Region 6, said that the news is a welcome development, noting that the local meat producers to export their products abroad.

The Social Security System has expanded the website services of www.sss.gov.ph to accept members’ benefit claims, loan applications and availment and employers’ contribution and loan collection reports starting on June 6, SSS President and Chief Executive Officer, Emilio de Quiros, Jr., said in a press release.
The website enhancements would give members easy and fast access to SSS products and benefits and they can transact anytime, anywhere, De Quiros said.
"We want to make transactions easier and convenient. Part of this thrust is to offer services right in their own homes or offices thru the SSS website," he said.
