Sideswiped woman
dies in Hinigaran

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

A woman waiting for a jeepney in Hinigaran town, Negros Occidental, past 5 p.m. Thursday was killed when she was sideswiped by a canter truck.

The victim was identified by Hinigaran town police chief, Insp. Nerito Lobrido, as Lolita Matilla, 48, of Villa Angela Subdivision in Brgy. Pilar, Hinigaran.

Matilla was rushed to the Hinigaran District hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 1 Stephen Ablao showed that a truck loaded with sugarcane with plate number GWN873 driven by Edgar Laureano, 31, of Brgy. Mansablay in Isabela town was heading west of the highway in Brgy. Narawis when it hit the rear portion of the canter truck.

The cane truck was trying to overtake the canter truck with plate number GNZ474 driven by Renato Aguillen, 36, of Pasig City, Metro Manila. The impact pushed the Canter truck forward hitting Matilla who was standing by the road, Lobrido said.

The canter truck continued running and, hit a concrete post and a coconut tree beside the road before it fell on its right side, Lobrido also said.

Both drivers were detained at the Hinigaran police but Aguillen was released while Laureano will face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

Ablao said that Laureano, who was on his way to Victorias City when the accident happened was observed to be under the influence of intoxicating liquor.*APN
