Determined to improve their record after three successive setbacks, the Philippine U14 Girls’ Football Team blanked Cambodia, 3-0, in the Asean Football Confederation Festival of Football in Vietnam yesterday.
Dominating the first half with their intensity, the nationals made all three goals in the first half, with Nina Ricci Sausi Yanto scoring the first goal in the 12th minute.
Negrense Janice Uy Pia Samillano of San Carlos City made it 2-0 in the 24th minute, while Casandra Alleje delivered Philippines’ third goal in the 43rd to put pressure on the Cambodians.
The nationals needed the win to bounce back in the competition after suffering three successive setbacks against Japan (2-0), China (6-0), and Thailand (1-0).
Their first win in the tournament was scored against Chinese Tapei, 1-0.
In the second half of the game against Cambodia, the young Filipina booters strengthened their defense and denied their opponents any chance of scoring.
They managed to hold on to the lead until the final whistle to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
With the win, the improved its record to 2-3.
The team will face South Korea today at 9 a.m. and against host Vietnam at 4 p.m.
Aside from Samillano, six other Negrenses are in the lineup. They are Riza Isabelle Rodriguez Carmona, Mary Jojiel Dechimo Junco, and Edniela May Salem Sijub of San Carlos City; Noelle Mikaela Leonardia De Asis and Irish Oliveros Navaja of Bacolod City, and Thea Claire Javellana Concepcion of Talisay City.
