Bacolod to host
 tchoukball tourney

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia has agreed to host next year’s 5th Asia Pacific Tchoukball Championship games set on August 1-5, 2012.

Expected to join in the competition are  600 to 700 players and coaches from 16 countries led by defending champion Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hongkong China, Laos, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, India, UAE, Brunei Darussalam,  Mayanmar and the host country Philippines.

Considered as a new sport in the country, tchoukball (pronounced chookball), was invented in 1960 by Dr Hermann Brandt, a Swiss sports scientist. It is gaining grounds in different countries and starting to become popular in the Philippines.

The Philippine Tchoukball Federation, headed by its president Pastor Gary Visitacion, met with Leonardia recently to discuss the initial preparations for next year’s tournament.

During a dinner-meeting hosted by Dr. Ver Lacson, Leonardia expressed his interest in the competition and cited its economic returns to the city.

He acknowledged the possibility of potential business investments by the officials and businessmen from other countries who will be coming to Bacolod City during this major event.
