Talisay City’s Peewee Demonteverde drained a game winning turnaround buzzer-beating triple from the top of the arc to pull out a heart thumping victory over top-seed Province of Negros Occidental, 78-77, in the semifinals of the 11th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.
In the second game, Davies Paint/Republic Hardware grabbed the fist final slot by routing Manila Beer, 84-64.
Talisay showed dominance in the second half as it took a 66-55 lead at the end of the third quarter and held on to the lead at 75-68 in the last two minutes on a Sonny Abaring triple.
But the undefeated Province scored a flurry of points in a span of 35 seconds with a Mark Ramos putback, a Joemarie Bahon triple and a Rex Bayer layup to knot the count at 75-all with 1:21 left.
Ramos’ free throw line jumper put Province on top with 33.5 seconds remaining. Province had a chance to complete its comeback and oust Talisay but Province Chad Paez missed two free throws with 9.7 seconds left which set the stage for a dramatic Demonteverde heroics with 5.7 seconds left in the clock.
Demonteverde paced Talisay with 20 points while Jobel Abaring shot 13, Sonny Abaring picked up 11 points, and Laborte and Layan had 9 points each.
Bayhon finished with 25 points for Province, Ramos added 14 points, Rex Bayer made 9, and Dawny Suarez and Marlon Talatala tallied 6 points each.
The rubber match for Talisay and Province will be played on March 11 at 7 pm.
Meanwhile, Davies took the first quarter, 21-19, and extended the lead to 47-39 as Tony Boy Espinosa and Ruel Balgos scored 10 points each, with teammate Francis Salcedo canning three triples.
After taking a 52-42 advantage at halftime, Davies remained hot as Salcedo scored on two uncontested layups and Balgos hit a top of the key jumper that ignited a third quarter run to take a commanding 70-48 lead.
Francis Salcedo scored 20 points and led four other players in double figures with Ruel Balgos, Leo Bat-og, Ely Olarte and Espinosa finishing with 16, 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Stanley Tizon and Johnson Salazar had 15 points each for Manila Beer.
Manila Beer will play for 3rd place on March 12 at 4 p.m., while Davies awaits the winner between Talisay City and Province at 5:30 p.m.*NAB
