DENR SAYS
No info on
mining operation

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Negros Oriental has not been  officially informed about the ongoing mining exploration in Basay town.

Community and Environment and Natural Resources Officer, Mario Aragon, said he knew about the mining exploration only when told about the presence of heavy equipment from a mining company in Maglinao, Basay.

Aragon, however, explained that mining operations are under the jurisdiction of the Mines and Geo Sciences Bureau regional office in Central Visayas, especially when the application is for large operations.

He disclosed having received reports from his men in the field that the ground activity is being conducted by a Canadian company to determine the commercial viability of copper deposits in the area.

Aragon said even if a provincial permit is not required, as host province, mining applications should pass through the Negros Oriental government for monitoring and for compliance of requirements in its implementation,  but this did not happen in this case.*JG
