Jr. NBA reg’l
tryout set March 19

The Jr. NBA, presented by Alaska, will hold its regional selection among young basketeers on March 19 at the St. John’s Institute Activities Center in Bacolod City.

Qualified to join the tryout are boys ages 10 to 14 years old by March 1, 2011. Participants are advised to bring their original NSO-certified birth certificate and photocopy, and should present a school ID or any identification with picture.

The tryout will start with the registration of players from 10:30 a.m. up to 2 p.m., followed by the announcement of top 20 players at 4 p.m.

After a scrimmage, the top 10 players who will qualify for the national selection in Manila will be selected.

The qualifiers will received an all-expense-paid trip to Manila, whiere they will join the other regional qualifiers for the national selection on April 9 up to 11.

They will join 40 other kids who will compete for the 10 slots in the national training camp at Mall of Asia. The top 10 campers will be tapped to join the 2011 Jr. NBA Philippines All-Star Team who received an authentic NBA experience and the chance to play against other Jr. NBA All-Star Teams in other countries.

The Jr. NBA organizers held a coaching clinic and basketball camp in Bacolod City on January 21-23.

The coaching clinic was joined by 220 individuals, while 1,005 kids participated in the basketball camp, also held at the SJI Activities Center.

The tryout on March 19 will be conducted by coaches Jama Mahlalela and Elmer Cabahug of the Jr. NBA and the Alaska coaching staff led by Jojo Lastimosa and Dickie Bachmann.

Local organizers, led by Tyron Cu and Roger Montalbo, hope that there will be players from Bacolod City who will follow in the footsteps of SJI ace player Kirell Brahndon Montalbo, who made it in last year’s Jr. NBA All-Star team that played in Beijing.
